The number of old people is proliferating in developed societies. It is estimated that the number of individuals over 60 will be 1.375 billion in 2030, corresponding to 16% of the world population. In terms of health and social service policies ageing is seen as a potential problem for future services and a lack of resources (personnel in care and funds for state pensions). This may therefore create negative attitudes and lead to discrimination against persons of advanced age. Age is the most frequently mentioned reason for discrimination in EU member states.
‘Ageism’ is sometimes seen as a special form of age discrimination. Some authors consider ageism as broader than age discrimination, referring to deeply rooted negative beliefs about old people and the ageing process. It has become necessary to discuss the effects of especially the elderly care responsibility and the increasing economic and social importance of care services on society and the world in the context of intergenerational relations.
The development of intergenerational relations is hoped to play a key role in coping with the demographic and social change brought about by ageing. Uşak Okyay Okçuluk Spor Kulübü has launched THE INTERGENERATIONAL JOINT ARCHERY ORIENTEERING (ARCHORI) project which will reduce ageism in sports by strengthening the cooperation and communication between the old and young generations by using advantage of traditional archery as a sport being suitable to be done by both the young and the old together.
The specific objective of the project is to improve the knowledge and skills of the old and young people on traditional archery sport and culture via intergenerational joint training programs; develop the category of intergenerational joint orienteering for archers in traditional archery competitions; reduce ageism in EU society by involving the elderly people in social life through sports and fostering intergenerational tolerance.
As the specific objective of this project is achieved, it will contribute to the overall objective of the project "to promote the development of the inclusion and diversity of European networks in the field of sport".
